A Senate of millionaires
Long gone are the days when the members of the Senate were poor politicians. Now the trend is for senators to be politicians who have made fortunes, as reported in Hoy.
24 out of 32 senators have presented financial statements declaring assets totaling more than RD$700 million. Of the 24 legislators who have presented their finances, the smallest fortune is RD$9.5 million. Hoy speculates that the documents still do not reflect the full reality of all the legislators’ assets.
It mentions the case of senator Felix Vasquez of Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) with RD$124.9 million, while others say that La Altagracia senator, Amable Aristy Castro, has the largest fortune. Aristy has chosen not to take up his Senate seat for the third time so as not to leave his post at the Dominican Municipal League and has not presented any sworn statement of assets.
